It was a fairly busy May long weekend for Kimberley and Cranbrook RCMP with most of the calls revolving around driving and waterways.

Sgt. Chris Newel of the RCMP stated in a news release on Tuesday, May 23 that there was a higher volume of calls over the weekend but no serious incidents were reported.

“Police attended the Wasa area several times as a result of previous issues but there was no bush parties, which was the concern local residents had,” said Newel.

There were a few noise complaints in Kimberley and the outlying area, but warnings were issued and residents were cooperative.

In terms of traffic, there were three motor vehicle collisions that were all single vehicles with no serious injuries.

“Police commonly receive erratic driving complaints and depending on the call volume and where officers are depends largely on whether we are able to apprehend and deal with them,” said Newel. “In one case police were fortunate to be in the right place at the right time, which may have prevented a more serious incident.”

A motorcycle rider received 90 days prohibited to driving, and the motorcycle was impounded for 30 days after being clocked at 149 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone. The driver was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed.

Constable Kaite Forgeron of the Cranbrook RCMP stated in a news release on May 23, that officers were busiest on the waterways.

“Members went to both Moyie and Tie Lakes with the RCMP boat,” said Forgeron. “Moyie saw 14 boats stopped and tickets and warnings issued for Failure to Produce Pleasure Operator Cards, No Boat License, Boats not Marked and No Life Jackets on two of the boats stopped.

“On Tie Lake, five boats were stopped with tickets or warnings issued for these same offences.”

Cranbrook police also took two impaired drivers off the road over the weekend and are conducting an investigation into impaired driving as a result of an accident.

“RCMP had several roadblocks set up in the South Country and stopped hundreds of vehicles,” said Forgeron. “Of those vehicles stopped, one was issued a three day Roadside Suspension and one prohibited driver was taken off the road.”

Police also attended an accident at Umbrella Beach involving two teenagers and a quad roll over. Both of the teens were transported to hospital with undetermined injuries.
