City loans Health Centre Society funds for new roof

Money will be paid back over 15 years

Work has begun on replacing the roof on the Kimberley Health Centre.

The City of Kimberley will be loaning the Kimberley Health Care Society $276,900 to replace the roof on the Kimberley Health Centre.

The Health Centre, formerly the Kimberley and District Hospital, is owned by the Health Care Society, not the city and as such, the Society is responsible for all capital improvements and replacements.

The replacement of the roof has been looming, as it is the original roof from 1958 and well past its 25 year useful life and at risk of failure.

“The Health Centre Society owns the building,” said Mayor Don McCormick. “They clearly don’t have the resources to pay for the new roof and so will be borrowing from us (the City). It will come out of our general surplus fund. That’s a contingency surplus in the budget. They will borrow at the same rate that we would have received for the money.

“It’s great that we are in a position to do this. It has to be done.”

McCormick says that the money will be repaid over a 15 year term.
