With a deal for unity around confidence measures between the NDP and Greens giving them a slim majority if it holds, Premier Christy Clark announced on Tuesday that she would reconvene the Legislature as soon as possible and face a confidence vote almost immediately.

If the Liberals can’t pass a confidence vote, which is likely given the agreement between the NDP and the Greens, Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon will approach NDP Leader John Horgan to form the government.

The agreement is only for issues relating to budget and supply; any legislation that does not relate to confidence is not subject to the terms and support will be decided by an issue to issue basis.

However, both Horgan and Green Leader Andrew Weaver speak of a four year, stable, minority government. It remains to be seen how long it will last but at the moment, it seems inevitable that Horgan will take over the premiership.

It’s been quite an early ride for newly elected Columbia River Revelstoke MLA Doug Clovechok. Instead of easing into his new role, Clovechok has been attending caucus meetings as the future of the BC government is discussed.

Last week, Clovechok said he looked on a minority government as an opportunity to work together across party lines. At that time, there may have still been hope that the BC Liberals would remain the sitting government and an agreement of some sort could be made with the Green Party.

With those hopes now dashed, Clovechok released a brief statement on Tuesday.

“As the party that won the most seats in this election, the BC Liberals have a responsibility to face the Legislature as government — so BC’s future can be determined in the people’s house, not behind closed doors. The agreement between the second and third place parties would indicate that NDP orange has become the new Green. No matter the outcome when the Legislature meets, I was elected to serve the people of Columbia River-Revelstoke as best I can, and that is exactly what I will continue doing.”
