A fire broke out on an upper storey of the apartment building at King Street and Cobham Avenue on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
Cranbrook Fire, RCMP and EMS attended in force, and evacuated the residents of the former Knights Hall at 414 King Street West. Firefighters had to rescue two occupants from the third story. One patient was taken to hospital with minor burns and smoke inhalation injuries.
The fire at the site of the former nurses residence next to where the St. Eugene Hospital, and subsequently the Tudor House used to be, was put out by mid-afternoon. There is no word yet on the cause of the fire, or extent of damage. An investigation in to the cause of the fire was to begin on Wednesday morning, Nov. 23.
The City of Cranbrook said in a release Tuesday that Red Cross Emergency Services Support (ESS) volunteers through the East Kootenay Emergency Management Program (EKEMP) are providing support to the 24 tenants who have been displaced due to the fire. Those individuals requiring immediate accommodation or support were to register with ESS at the Reception Center at the Sandman Inn on Cranbrook Street Tuesday night.
Those requiring accommodation or support afterwards are asked to call 1-888-800-6493.
Self-registration for those who do not require immediate support can be done online at https://era-evacuees.embc.gov.bc.ca/registration-method. Affected residents are asked to register even if they do not require any support.
