This week in Vancouver at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities convention, Mayor Don McCormick will be making a pitch to the Minister of Jobs, Trades and Technology, Bruce Ralston, to visit the East Kootenay and become acquainted with its potential for solar industry.
“Solar development in the Cranbrook Kimberley area has the opportunity to be a catalyst to create jobs,” McCormick said. “The more solar companies we can attract, the more jobs.”
McCormick also wants to talk to the Minister about BC Hydro and what they pay for power from solar projects. Right now, he said, Hydro is not approving any more solar projects.
“Right now you couldn’t put in a solar farm if you wanted to. I want to talk about opportunities for the solar industry. I want the Minister to support green policies for BC Hydro. We are looking for policy tweaks to make solar more attractive. It wasn’t priority for the previous government. We need to be able to do things to grow this region.”
