Second update: Mounties have located the vehicle of the person alleged to have shot a police officer on the Trans-Canada Highway Tuesday afternoon west of Golden.

The vehicle was found abut three kilometres east of Revelstoke.

The manhunt continues, while people living in the small neighbourhood of Johnson Heights, near the search area, are being asked to stay inside.

First update: RCMP confirmed a police officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being shot while conducting a traffic stop on the Trans-Canada Highway near Golden.

“At this time we’re confirming that our officer sustained a gunshot injury during the circumstances surrounding the initial vehicle stop. The police officer has been taken to hospital. The officer and family are being offered all possible support”, wrote RCMP spokesperson Staff-Sgt. Rob Vermeulen in a news release.

Police were stopping traffic while looking for a suspected car thief. According to the RCMP, there was an altercation that led to the officer being shot, and the suspect fleeing in another vehicle it allegedly stole at gunpoint.

The incident resulted in the closure of the Trans-Canada while police searched for the suspect. RCMP say traffic is now being allowed through after a closure lasting about four hours, but the highway is not fully re-opened yet.

“Thank you very much to the motoring public for their patience,” wrote Vermeulen. “These are serious allegations, and our officers needed to work quickly to gather perishable evidence.”

The search for the suspect continues.
