The Teck Kootenay Cup races #5 & #6 took place on January 12 and 13 at the Kimberley Nordic Club. There was a record number of racers this year with 280 skiers competing in one or both events on Saturday and Sunday. There were teams from Calgary, Canmore, Fernie, Golden, Invermere, Nelson, Slocan Valley, Rossland, Kimberley and Libby Montana.
Racers competed in classic sprint races on Saturday and free ski races with mass starts on Sunday.
Event Organizer Christine Wilson says there were “an incredible 125 heats of sprints on Saturday with some great photo finishes”.
There were a few ex-Olympian racers, including Sara Renner who placed first in the Masters 1 category and Thomas Grandi. Beckie Scott was also there at the Nordic Club enjoying the races.
“Racers were pleased with the well- groomed trails, excellent weather and snow conditions, and there were lots of smiling faces all weekend,” said Wilson. “
A huge thank you to all the people who made this such a wonderful weekend! This was made possible by a group of very dedicated volunteers who did a great job hosting a very successful race for over 280 skiers. A big thank you to Teck for sponsoring this amazing event.”
