Flannel Fest returns for year six

Flannel Fest, Kimberley’s winter festival, is returning for its sixth year and will run from February 15 to 18, 2024.

“It’s just unbelievable, I mean I can remember Karen [Cetinski] and I sitting around creating the first one over six years ago, thinking Kimberley needs a winter festival and we might as well create one,” co-coordinator James “Archie” Archibald reflected. “So that’s kind of how we got going. I was talking with her, she just said she wanted to create a winter festival and I was like well I have some really great ideas and this is sort of how it came to fruition.”

The COVID pandemic meant that two of the years of Flannel Fest were done virtually, and Archibald said they’ve hung onto some of the ideas they integrated into those online-only years, such as the online photo contests, in addition to the ever-expanding list of in-person events.

”We’re always encouraging other people to create their own events and help us make Flannel Fest bigger,” he said. “Anything that you can do in the summertime you can usually do in the wintertime and I’m planning to put a post out just giving ideas to everyone and hoping that someone will run away with one of them or two.

“Karen and I, I think we’ve done a great job in organizing this, but we could definitely use some help with some newer feet-on-the ground events. I’ve got a lot of dreams!”

One of the big new events they have announced for this year is Warming Up Winter, a reggae night at Centennial Hall on Saturday, Feb. 17. Featuring DJ Naytaron and DJ Sasquatch, the event costs $10 and will have food and drinks available, with a full bar.

From 7 p.m. to 9 p.. the dance will be all-ages, then from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. the bar will open and the event will become adults-only.

Archibald hopes that this “plants a seed” that will grow into a larger-scale reggae festival that takes place in the summer.

Returning events include the Fat Bike Poker Run, the Chubby Wheels Enduro Fatbike Race, the Elks Poker Night and the Flannel Fling Disc Golf Tournament at Bootleg Gap Golf Course.

In terms of contests, there will once again be the Shirley Rossi Backyard Snow Sculpture contest, Best Dressed Flannel Pet, a Flannel Art Contest, Kimberley’s Best Bear Competition and the Royal Flannel Couple photo competition.

The winners of the Royal Flannel Couple will win a one-night stay at the Larix Hotel and dinner at the Stonefire.

Freddy the “Flannelsquatch”, the official mascot of the festival who was introduced last year, will be back again this year making his rounds, throwing discs, riding fat bikes and stopping for photo ops.
