From now until October, 2018, every first Saturday of the month Kimberley will be hosting the First Saturdays Arts and Culture series.

In the Platzl, there will be a Rotary pancake breakfast from 9a.m. to 11a.m., alongside the Kimberley Bed Race, a silent auction and live entertainment.

The third annual Bed Race takes place at 10:30a.m. outside of Centre 64. All proceeds from the event will be going towards the Kimberley Arts Council’s Take a Seat Campaign, which is raising money to purchase new seats in the theatre.

Event organizer Emily Smith says that the race is a fun, community event.

“It’s a fun way to raise money, last year we raised $600 for the Give us a Lift campaign, and now that the campaign is over, we’ve focused our efforts on a new campaign to replace the seats in the theatre. The seats are atrocious, many will agree, they’ve lived out their lives,” she said.

She adds that the Bed Race is a great way for local businesses to promote themselves.

“Last year we saw a few businesses enter and they decorated their beds with banners and wore team t-shirts. The race is open to anyone though, not just businesses. It’s a super fun, sprint-style race, about 400 metres. Teams have the opportunity to decorate their beds before racing in heats. Participants are guaranteed two races, and up to four depending on how many teams we have,” Smith said. “Use your imagination, have fun with it.”

There are still a few spots remaining if you want to register a team. The price per team is $80 and beds are supplied. Prizes this year include a $300 gift certificate to Buckhorn and Main, a $200 gift certificate to the Sullivan Pub, a $100 gift certificate to Marysville Pub, a trophy made by a local artist, and, of course, bragging rights.

There will also be a kids bed pan race at 10a.m.. It is free for kids to participate and there are prizes for everyone. No sign up is required, simply drop-in.

“It’s a great spectator sport, come on out and watch or cheer the teams on. Be sure to visit the Rotary pancake breakfast before as well, it’s the ultimate bed and breakfast,” Smith said.

New this year is a Circus Arts workshop at Centre 64, hosted by circus arts educator and Kimberley local Jerrod Bondy. There will be two sessions from 12p.m. to 1:50p.m., and 2p.m. to 3:50p.m.. Participants will learn basic techniques on how to manipulate juggling balls, clubs, rings, as well as flower sticks and diablos. This workshop is suitable and accessible for children and adults, ages 10 and up. Feel free to bring your own equipment or use the equipment supplied during the workshop.

The Kimberley Arts Council is also excited to announce that Andrea Revoy from Blue Moon

Pottery and Fibre Studio in Creston will be in attendance at the July 7th First Saturday.

Well known for her pottery, Andrea is also a self-described fibre art junkie. Andrea’s fabric artwork includes dying, weaving, spinning and crazy spun yarns. Her work spans from nature based aesthetics to wild and voluminous roving. Andrea will be in the Platzl from 12p.m. to 3p.m. demonstrating her fibre arts. Stop by and try.

Also join the GoGo Grannies at the Chateau for delicious Strawberry Desserts. Tickets are $10 from 12p.m. to 3 p.m.. Advance reservations are necessary for large groups. To book, please call Ruth at 250-427-3539.
