Paul Rodgers

?aq’am, or St. Mary’s Band, welcomed visitors from around the region to celebrate National Aboriginal Day at the ?aq’am Community Arbor. Guests were treated to traditional music, prayer, wackna (deer jerky) making, and beading.

Tours were given of the St. Eugene Church as well as the St. Eugene Mission. Formerly a residential school, the community decided that rather than tear it down, as many other residential schools across the country were, they would repurpose it. Now it exists as both a top-of-the-line resort and championship golf course. Not only does the revenue benefit the community, but it stands as a reminder of the history of residential schools.
