Rocky Mountain Naturalists go out counting for Great Backyard Bird Count

20 members of the Rocky Mountain Naturalists spent four days — Feb.14 – 17— taking part in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC).

The GBBC is a global event that takes place in mid-February every year, sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audobon Society, and Birds Canada.

Participants, including field counters and feeder watchers, spend at least 15 minutes on any of the four count days, watching and counting as many birds as they can find, and reporting their results on eBird or Merlin apps.

The Naturalists counted a total for 43 species.

These observations held scientists better understand global bird populations before one of the annual migrations.
