City provides update on lead paint at Civic Centre

City of Kimberley working to engage contractor to undertake abatement and remediation work following discovery of peeling lead paint at the Civic Centre.

After the discovery of peeling lead paint at the Civic Centre, capacity has been reduced for Dynamiters' games to 1010 as all seating on the east side of the arena has been roped off.

The Bulletin reached out to the City of Kimberley for more information.

Nik Morissette, senior manager of Operations, said the City has closed the affected areas off to "ensure public safety."

"After consulting with an industrial hygienist, it was advised that all areas with peeling paint be closed off to prevent further disturbance and reduce the risk of exposure," Morissette said.

"This has impacted several emergency exits, temporarily reducing the building’s capacity to 1,010. The City is in the process of engaging a contractor to undertake the abatement and remediation, which is expected to take several weeks. The public will be notified once a timeline for this work has been confirmed."

The Bulletin will report more on this story as it develops.
