Kimberley-specific social media pages have been flooded with photos, videos and anecdotes of local bear activity, and the Conservation Officer Service (COS) is aware.

"The COS is aware of bear activity in Kimberley, including reports of bears damaging property and entering homes to access garbage and food," said David Karn with the COS. "CO’s are responding to calls as necessary to ensure public safety."

The COS encourages the public to to ensure all attractants including garbage, pet food and birdseed are all securely stored.

"Residents are also asked to ensure doors, windows and garages are not left open, as bears can follow the scent of food right into your home," Karn added. "Securing and monitoring your home in bear country is essential."
