Healthy Kimberley is eligible for a Western + CanadaHelps Giving Tuesday nomination that would provide them with $10,000 in funding.

Healthy Kimberley is looking for your support as they are eligible for a Western + CanadaHelps Giving Tuesday Nomination.

CanadaHelps gives 10 charities $10,000 each, through Western Financial Group's Communities Foundation.

Healthy Kimberley's mission is to create a healthier community by "making the healthy choice the easy choice." Their main program is the Food Recovery Depot, which diverts food waste from the landfill, improves food security and supports environmental sustainability. They recover food deemed fit to eat, but not fit for sale.

Healthy Kimberley said this nomination would be a great opportunity for them to gain more recognition and secure funding to help them continue their work in the community.

While Healthy Kimberley's meals are available to anyone in the community, they serve a very important role in managing food waste in Kimberley while at the same time helping residents who face food insecurity. They are the only food recovery organization in Kimberley and they provide free groceries and meals to its vulnerable residents, utilizing mainly recovered food to craft delicious and healthy meals.

Since their founding in 2018, Healthy Kimberley has recovered 585,891 pounds of food, produced 44,141 servings and logged 12,432 volunteer hours. They currently serve 35 agencies, including the Early Learning Centre, Bellies to Babies, Better at Home, the Spark Youth Centre and Home Support Nursing, and have provided 311 hours open to the public.

By diverting that much food from the landfill, Healthy Kimberley has saved around 848 tonnes of carbon emissions, further contributing to the health of the environment as a whole.

Through years of planning the group has secured funding through United Way BC's Critical Food Infrastructure Fund to complete their onsite commercial kitchen in 2025. They also recently added an electric cargo van through support from Colubia Basin Trust and the United Way BC Climate Resilient Fund.

"These exciting assets will help us increase the impact of our hard work," they said in a press release. "Ongoing, operational funding remains the most challenging to sustain and every bit of community support helps us keep our doors open."
