In December, 2024, Kimberley-based hairdresser Brandy Stevens, who owns and operates the salon Hair Therapy, raised $1,140 for the Kootenay Haven Transition House.
The fundraising campaign raised money through a $5 ticket draw for a chance to win a $150 shopping spree at Hair Therapy. On top of ticket sales, the salon donated 10 per cent from the sale of all retail products directly to the transition house.
Stevens said she hoped to raise both funds and awareness for this institution, showcasing how important their services are and the importance of local business spearheading fundraising endeavours such as this.
“I’m overwhelmed by the generosity of my clients and community,” Stevens said. “Kootenay Haven provides essential resources and safe spaces for women and children. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their important work and to help raise awareness to the services they offer and to support women.”
Kootenay Haven Transition House is a temporary home for women and children fleeing violence, or who are at risk of violence, that is available 24 hours a day. Contributions like this ensure that their programs can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
Their services include:
- providing access to safe, secure and confidential services;
- providing information and supports for decision making;
- short-term shelter;
- referrals to other services; and
- links to affordable housing.
