Kimberley Nordic Club raising funds for ski playground

Ski playgrounds provide fun, challenging terrain for all levels of skier.

Each year, the Kimberley Nordic Club (KNC) raises funds for a key club initiative. This year they are raising money to construct a new ski playground at Iker's Landing.

According to a KNC press release, a ski playground is a: "designated location which has been developed or set up to assist children and adults to learn to ski naturally, and which provides a variety of skiing discoveries. They are both fun to use and offer excellent exposure to various terrain features."

The club has a target of $9,350 to build the new ski playground. KNC manager Daniel Childress said this would support their already thriving youth programming.

"We have the second largest youth skill development program in B.C., with 180 kids under the age of 12 participating in our ski programs," he said. "The new ski playground will be a popular feature for our programs as kids learn to navigate different features and terrain in a fun, controlled environment."

The club currently has one designated ski playground trail, leading from Happy Hans into the stadium. It is regularly used by skiers from across all their programs, as well as members and visitors, providing fun, challenging terrain.

The club's goal is to build new ski playground features at Iker's landing, with the project including three separate "roller coaster dip" trails starting at Landsem and ending at Iker's Landing. The three roller trailers will range in difficulty from begginer to advanced, creating opportunities for skill development and a lot of fun at Iker's.

This project will involve resurfacing the hill adjacent to Landsem, so KNC will hire an excavator operator to construct permanent roller features on the hill, using fill that is stored on site.

After it's built, the playground will then form naturally every winter. Additionally, the trails will benefit the Freewheelers cycling club youth programs in the summertime.
