“Federal Aid For Mark Creek”
Federal assistance to the city of Kimberley to aid in the “covering of the channel of Mark Creek through the city in order to prevent further loss of lives,” was assured today by Liberal M.P. Jim Byrne.
Speaking at a coffee party in his home city, Mr. Byrne said he was “deeply concerned” over the drownings in Mark Creek and has investigated the possibility of assisting in a covering project under the Federal Urban Renewal Program.
“The program does not appear to provide for such municipal projects,” he said.
However, he pointed out, if the City of Kimberley took the initiative to have the project undertaken under the Winter Works program, the Federal government would assist to the tune of paying 50 per cent of all labour costs.
“Since returning to the riding,” Mr. Byrne told the meeting, “I have received a number of inquiries regarding the possibility of Federal assistance.
“My sympathies are certainly with parents in Kimberley who are subjected to continual worry regarding their children playing near the creek.
“Water just naturally attracts all youngsters and the hazard of Mark Creek will not be overcome until the channel is completely fenced or covered through Kimberley.”
Mr. Byrne also noted that covering or fencing of the creek would also assist in beautifying the city.

“Picked Up In Passing”
WHO HAS GOT THEM – About a year ago Chris Sorenson of Super Valu donated a set of uniforms for use by a team in the City Intermediate League. Now with a new hockey season about to start, nobody but nobody seems to know where they are. Quite a bit of cold, hard cash involved in the purchase of uniforms, and sponsors won’t be too happy if these are used only one year and then disappear. These uniforms are badly needed NOW so if you have one of these, or know who has them; Chris, John McKernzie or Struan Robertson would sure be glad to hear from you.
Standing with Al Fabro by the Post Office and watching the demolition of the Orpheum and feeling Al “winch” with every blow of the hammer. This one indeed one of Mr. Fabro’s finest job, the erection of the “Orpheum” and undoubtedly one of the best built and solid edifices in town. (Remember its official opening Garnet).

“Kimberley Credit Union Celebrates 21st Birthday With Assets Of $2,000,000”
The Kimberley Credit Union has passed another milestone in their growth and progress. The Officers and members should feel justly proud of the fact that their business assets are in excess of Two million Dollars.
At the present time there are about four thousand members taking advantage of the services of their own organization, building their savings at a good return, and borrowing at a reasonable cost. Approximately half of these are school children, who are learning the fun of saving and the advantage of having cash for future needs. Through their savings many have been able to buy band instruments, and various other essentials, also in many cases providing for future education.
During the past year the Kimberley Credit Union has implemented many new services to accommodate their members. WE now have Traveler’s cheques, Term deposits, and Accommodation loans to name a few. As we grow there will probably be more added.
Our members know that their savings earn good returns and are completely protected, in an organization which they own and control, where the motto is “Not For Profit, Not For Charity, But For Service.”
