The third-annual Kimberley Underground Show and Shine, presented by Ktown Custom Auto, is all set for Saturday, June 28 at the Underground Mining Railway and this year's event is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.
Children are able to ride the train for free all day starting at 9 a.m., a little earlier this year than in years past. There will also be a bouncy castle and face-painting station for the kids.
Kevin Dunnebacke, owner of Ktown Custom Auto, said this year there will be a food court area with places to sit, creating a more organized, relaxing area for guests.
"We hope to have 60 cars this year," Dunnebacke said. "And this year I stepped up my game a little bit this year and reached out for a social liquor licence, so you're not in the pen anymore, you're allowed to actually walk around with a beer in your hands. It makes it a bit more social and we're going to have some music playing."
He added they are planning to coordinate with the Spark Society Youth Centre to have a lemonade and cookie stand set up at the Power House, so when the stops there on the tour there will be refreshments available, while raising some money for the centre.
The Kimberley Rotary Club are hosting breakfast this year and there will be great local coffee provided by Northstar Roasting Co. And of course, there will be a beer garden for the adults.
This year there will also be a raffle for a metal pedal car, so make sure to bring cash to get your tickets.
The event coincides with the first ever KOREfest and Localpalooza, which takes place from June 28-29 in the Platzl and Dunnebacke said he hopes to see families walking back and forth between the two events and just getting out and enjoying the community of Kimberley.
Registration at the Show and Shine starts at 8 a.m. and the event will run until roughly 3 p.m. Car registration is $20. The event is free to attend for spectators and will feature new and returning cars from last year, Dunnebacke said you never really know what you're going to get. Each adult is able to bring two children 13 and under.
There will be T-shirts for sale as well as lots of swag that will be given away.
The event gets a lot of support from car enthusiasts in Cranbrook, Invermere and all across the Kootenays, but they also will sometimes get people who just happen to drive-in and see it's happening.
This year's event will hopefully feature the Kimberley Fire Department's new firetruck, as well as their beautiful historic truck. The RCMP will also be at this year's event.
Editor's note: There was a typo in the Kimberley Visitor's Guide that said this event was on June 8, not June 28. We sincerely apologize for the error and any confusion.
