The Kimberley Nordic Centre has once again been selected to host the Canada Cup Western Canadian Cross Country Ski Championships (Westerns) from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2 2025.
When the club held this event last year, it became the biggest event in its history and was a resounding success. The Westerns had over 400 athletes register last year, likely resulting in around 600 people in town for the weekend.
The championships drew racers from all over western Canada and the United States, with clubs coming from as far away as Winnipeg and Whitehorse.
"We anticipate around 500 skiers to participate this year, in addition to several hundred more coaches and support staff from the Yukon to Manitoba," said KNC general manager Daniel Childress.
This year's event will open on Thursday, Jan. 20 with official training. Registered racers and coaches will be exempt from trail fees. Trail fees will apply to all others, as well as on any unofficial training day, and can be purchased at the KNC kiosk. The table below outlines the daily schedule for the races. Details of rough start times will be posted closer to the event.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in the Open categories. There will be medals presented to the top 3 finishers in all categories. Merchandise prizes will also be available.
