On Saturday, March 15, Kimberley Alpine Resort (KAR) participated in a global day of snowboarding to celebrate the legacy of the late Jake Burton Carpenter, snowboarding pioneer and founder of Burton Snowboards.
"Jake's dream, perseverance, and generosity were a gift to the world," read a post on burton.com. "Not only did he put his blood, sweat, tears, and joy into snowboarding, but also into building a dedicated community that will carry it forward. Most winters, he clocked at least 100 days on snow."
Riders gathered at the base of KAR at 10 a.m. at a tent set up by Cranbrook's The Choice and then loaded the lift to do a lap all together starting at 10:30 a.m., coinciding with rides at ski resorts all over the world. Following the ride, there was a celebratory toast back at the Choice tent.
That Saturday also featured the Picnic in the Park Rail Jam at the resort's rail park, that was open to skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities. It was held in a jam format, focusing on fun and individual progression.
The weekend was blessed with a fresh dump of snow, that has started back up the following weekend.
There are still some big events coming up at KAR as the 2024/25 season comes to an end.
North Star Days is scheduled for Saturday, March 29, KAR's annual celebration of all things retro. Tryg Stand and the Band have been announced as the musical headliner for the day.
Then to close the season out, Spring Splash and the Dummy Downhill are on Saturday April 5 and Sunday April 6, respectively.
Tragically Hip cover band The Hip Replacements will perform on Saturday and The Mile High Club on Sunday.
