Copper peptide GHK-Cu has garnered recent attention in skincare and regenerative medicine for its potential to support skin health and repair. Discovered in the 1970s, this naturally occurring peptide is growing in popularity as an ingredient in anti-aging products.
“At Gray’s Compounding Pharmacy in Kimberley, we're committed to staying at the forefront of scientific research to empower our clients with the knowledge they need to make informed choices,” says Michelle Gray, pharmacist and owner. “While copper peptides show promising potential, it’s essential to approach them with a thoughtful and balanced perspective.”
What are peptides and what is copper peptide GHK-Cu?
Peptides are tiny chains of amino acids that help the body work properly. They build proteins and act like messengers, telling cells what to do and how to function. Research has increasingly highlighted the role peptides play in regulating aging and supporting cellular health.
GHK-Cu (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine copper) is a small peptide that binds to copper ions, a mineral vital for many biological functions. Naturally present in the human body, GHK-Cu levels decrease with age, hence the interest in its potential to counteract some effects of aging. Recent studies have shown that GHK-Cu can stimulate collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin structure and elasticity.
“Beyond supporting skin firmness and elasticity, collagen is essential for the strength of joints, tendons and ligaments, as well as the integrity of blood vessels and organs," Gray adds. "The emerging science behind GHK-Cu offers a glimpse into how this natural peptide could help maintain youthful skin by boosting collagen and elastin levels, while also supporting the body’s structural integrity as we age.”
Potential health applications of GHK-Cu
GHK-Cu’s applications extend beyond skincare to potentially support wound healing, hair health and more.
- Wound healing: GHK-Cu promotes cellular regeneration, supporting tissue repair and faster healing.
- Hair health: Research suggests GHK-Cu may stimulate hair follicles, potentially aiding in hair growth and health.
- Brain health and cognition: Studies show GHK-Cu may improve cognitive function by reducing inflammation and promoting neurogenesis (The process of generating new neurons in the brain, particularly in areas like the hippocampus, which is involved in memory and learning).
“While GHK-Cu continues to become more widely known and researched, we encourage clients to explore the science behind it and consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating new products into their routines,” Gray says.
