Military Ames veterans carefully removed the plaque honouring Kimberley's war dead from the old cenotaph.

It was done cautiously and with great care, but on Sunday, March 12, Military Ames veterans removed the plaques honouring Kimberley’s war dead and those who served from the old cenotaph.

“The plaques were carefully removed from the old cenotaph and will be refurbished and mounted on the new one,” said Military Ames facilitator Cindy Postnikoff. “The process was both exciting and nerve wracking. We were concerned about getting the large granite plaque off without breaking it. All went well and we celebrate our success. This is very exciting as it’s another step towards our goal.

“We are anxiously waiting for the snow to melt and construction will proceed. The next step is getting the sidewalks done”.

Military Ames intends to unveil the new cenotaph, which will be located on the vacant lot across from the Platzl on Wallinger Avenue, on June 4, 2017. That coincides with Canadian Armed Forces Day.

“There is still a lot of work to be done and funds to raise,” Postnikoff said.”We’d like to thank everyone who has helped and remind people that would like to, that they can donate to Military Ames at the Kimberley Credit Union. I have been approached by people in the community that would like to help with labour and would like to remind folks that we will need help with the concrete and ongoing fund raising. We will be having a large fleamarket in the Spring and are looking for donations.”

If you have items you’d like to donate and/or if you can spare a few hours please call Cindy 250- 919-3137.
