VANCOUVER - Polls have closed in British Columbia, the province where citizens had the last opportunity to vote in Canada's 42nd general election.

Voting stations were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Pacific time zone, an earlier start and finish time than anywhere else in the country.

B.C. is 4.5 hours behind Newfoundland, where Liberals appeared on the verge of sweeping the province.

Party leaders made a final push for west coast votes on the weekend, with the NDP's Tom Mulcair visiting Vancouver and Burnaby, while Green Leader Elizabeth May campaigned hard for southern Vancouver Island.

Stephen Harper rallied in the Conservative stronghold of Abbotsford, while Justin Trudeau focused on Surrey and North Vancouver, Tory regions that his party believes could swing Liberal.
