Golfers raise $17,000 for Kimberley girl

$17,814 raised for Jenna and family by Calgary seismic exploration industry
Jenna Homeniuk

The 61st annual Doodlebug Golf Tournament enjoyed its fourth year in Kimberley two weekends ago. Steeped with tradition, the event consists of the seismic exploration industry gathering together for a weekend full of golf, competition, and camaraderie.

This year, the Doodlebug committee made a conscious effort to support the local community of Kimberley. With Zoe Ferguson as a liaison, 115 gift baskets were created and given to the doodlebug guests, full of locally made treats from La Lune de Chocolate, Purcell Organics, and Kimberley Roasting Company to name a few.

Throughout the weekend guests enjoy numerous rounds of golf at Trickle Creek and Bootleg Gap. In the end the registrants are all competing for the coveted Doodlebug ceramics – perhaps a prize that only a true doodlebug can appreciate.

There is a large charity component to the event. With the goal of supporting a local cause in the community, Jenna Homeniuk’s fight against cancer was the perfect fit.

Throughout the weekend, guests compete in a chipping contest, long drive competition, and “I Wear Orange for Jenna” bracelets were sported by all. Zoe Ferguson delivered a speech to the crowd telling of Jenna’s story, challenges and  triumphs. With not a dry eye in the audience, a tone of generosity was spurred. The Chairman, Mark Watson and his committee raised more money for their charity than any of the 60 years prior. A total of $17,814.38 was presented to Jenna and her mom Paula at the Children’s Hospital in Calgary.

Perhaps one of the more unique components of the event is the Saturday evening theme night. This year the Doodlebugs enjoyed an Octoberfest in Bavaria. The entire group was sporting lederhosen, entertained by the Yodelling Woodcarver and the Conference Center was transformed into a Bavarian medieval town. Traditional German food, music and costume made for a fantastic conclusion to the 2013 Doodlebug.
