Kimberley's cull still a few weeks away

Kimberley going through contractor tender process; Council vote coming in a few weeks

The suspension of the deer cull in Elkford due to the contractor taking deer during daylight hours will have no effect on when Kimberley’s cull starts, says Mayor Ron McRae.

Elkford’s cull was suspended for one week.

The clover traps being used in Elkford are scheduled to go to Kimberley next. There is only one set of traps in the province and they move from community to community as needed.

But McRae says Kimberley has not yet finalized details around its cull, which will take up to 30 animals from Marysville and Chapman Camp/Blarchmont.

“The situation in Elkford doesn’t mean our cull will start any sooner,” McRae said. “We still haven’t closed the process on the contractor. We have to go through the tenders, then it has to go to Council.”

With the tender process only closing last Friday, it would not go to Council until at least January 27. There is a Council meeting tonight but that’s too soon.

“It’s not on the agenda for tonight,” McRae said.
