People’s Party names Kootenay-Columbia candidate

Stewart, 62, is a retired Registered Professional Forester and former Canadian Armed Forces member.

Nelson resident Rick Stewart will stand as first Kootenay-Columbia candidate for the new federal People’s Party of Canada in the October 21 election.

Stewart, 62, is a retired Registered Professional Forester and former Canadian Armed Forces member. After earning a diploma in Forest Technology from Selkirk College he went on to earn a Bachelor of Forest Science degree from the University of Alberta in 1986.

He worked for the Ministry of Forests in Williams Lake and then returned to Nelson in 1990 as the Regional Forest Health Officer, later becoming an Audit Team Manager with the Forest Practices Board. In 2000, Stewart incorporated his own company to provide environmental consulting services to major oil companies in Western Canada. He retired in 2014.

“I want to represent the people in the riding of Kootenay-Columbia as a People’s Party of Canada Member of Parliament,” Stewart said last week. “ I share our party leader Maxime Bernier‘s belief in personal responsibility and individual freedom and as your MP you will always be represented with respect and fairness. There is a lot of work needed to repair our foreign affairs, reform and simplify the tax system, eliminate corporate welfare and most important of all to unite our country from coast to coast, preserving our right of self-determination as a nation.”

He describes a concern with the current government as “the utter insanity of the Liberal’s large deficits and additional taxation while pursuing a program of dubious social engineering. They are driving away investment and placing a huge yoke of debt on our children. This is unacceptable, and I won’t be lectured about Canadian values by the smug media and Liberal left.”
