Put it in the can, Kimberley

Garbage set out in plastic bags is harmful to deer

Kimberley’s residents are learning, and adapting their behaviour, when it comes to urban deer.

With the no feeding bylaw being strictly enforced, and fines raised to a limit of $500 for an infraction, there are far fewer incidents of deliberate feeding of deer in Kimberley.

But you may be inadvertently feeding them. Deer will dig into your garbage bags looking for food, which can be harmful to the animals, as well as continue habituation problems. If you are having problems with deer getting into your garbage bags, the City requests that you start using a garbage an with a lid.

The can’s size can be up to 57 cm (22.5 inches) and 77 litres (20.3 gallons). Even with cans, garbage can be put out no earlier than 5 a.m. on collection day.
