The skies over Grand Forks lit up with a dazzling display of aurora borealis on Friday. A massive solar storm crashed into the Earth’s atmosphere over the weekend, exciting the magnetic field, causing a reaction between the charged particles from the sun and oxygen and nitrogen in the planet’s upper atmosphere, creating a glowing palette of pink, green, purple, blue and some red sheets of aurora to dance and shimmer across most of the planet’s northern hemisphere. Friday was the peak, with some faint aurora visible on Saturday and Sunday. Photos: Karen McKinley
