Rotary Drive paving to being shortly

Project is over budget due to rising cost of asphalt.

Kimberley City Council has awarded the contract for paving Rotary Drive from the bike park to Black Bear Bridge to BA Blacktop Ltd. The contract amount is $494,999.95, which is over the budgeted amount of $450,000.

Coun. Darryl Oakley said that there is room in the paving program budget for the overage.

The paving project will including traffic calming features and a bike lane.

Oakley explained that rising prices of asphalt caused the over cost — it has risen 30 per cent in the past year.

“It is difficult to get an accurate estimate with prices rising like that,” he said. “But the project is doable.”

Work would begin within a week or two, Oakley said, given that the window was closing on the paving season.

Coun. Don McCormick wondered if any work would be done on Gerry Sorensen Way and was told that the remainder of the paving budget would be spent on patching Gerry Sorensen Way.
