February 17, 1924 - June 21, 2019
Alan Becker- a son, brother, decorated World War II vet, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, friend and neighour. Admired, trusted, respected, generous, creative, musical, fun-loving, athletic, kind ... loved.
Alan Becker was born in Clavet, Saskatchewan to Titus and Rebecca Becker. He was the seventh of eleven siblings. After growing up on a farm he was drafted by the Trail Smoke Eaters Hockey team and moved to Trail, BC. He worked for CM&S (Cominco) and from there joined the Canadian Navy in 1943. He served as a gunner on merchant ships until discharged with commendation receiving the Oakleaf Cluster for bravery.
On April 18, 1945 he married Norma Louisa Johnson in Saskatoon and upon termination of the war they settled in Trail, BC where they raised two children; Gerald Allan and Norma May. In 1953 the family relocated to Marysville, BC where Al continued to work for CM&S and bought a local hardware business. He was active on local city council, Lion's Club (Charter President), curling club and golf club. As a tribute to his involvement in Marysville Golf Course; hole #3, a hole in which he designed was named after him.
Upon retirement in 1983, they relocated to Christina Lake, BC where he continued to be active in many aspects of community affairs, water works, community hall building committee and the golf course to name a few.
He was predeceased by his parents, 9 of his siblings and his wife, Norma Louisa in 2013. He is survived by his sister Cassie, son Gerry (Dawn), daughter Norma May (Doug), 5 grandchildren; Tara (Walter), Bruce (Stefanie), Gregory (Sarah), Stuart (Danielle), and Nicole (Chris) and 7 great grandchildren; Kimberlyn, Gerald, Braxton, Gianna, Ciaran, Teagan and James.
He will be remembered as a very community minded man who loved his family, animals and golf.
The family would like to thank the staff of Ivy House for their love and care for our father.
A Celebration of Alan's Life will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 1:00 pm at the Christina Lake Community Hall. In lieu of flowers donations to the Legion or charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Baker family of Grand Forks Funeral Home.
