James Stephen Waterhouse

August 23, 2019

October 14, 1938 - August 23, 2019
James Stephen Waterhouse was born in Colne, Lancashire, England on October 14, 1938. It is with great sadness we announce his passing on August 23, 2019. He lived a full life as a teacher, husband, father, actor and advocate for the arts.
In his younger years Stephen was gifted at most sports; rugby and running in particular. Towards the end of his life he found joy in watching sports and loved tennis, soccer and basketball. He cherished opportunities to travel back to the United Kingdom to visit family and friends, where he enjoyed walking and theatre performances.
Stephen taught in Sydney, Australia where he met Rosemary, his soon to be wife. Stephen was drawn to travel to the Kootenays upon recommendations from friends. While exploring BC he wrote to Rosemary and convinced her to leave city life in Australia and move to the Kootenays. They chose to raise their family in Kimberley, BC after Stephen landed a teaching role at Selkirk Secondary.
Stephen continued his education taking a sabbatical year to pursue his love of theatre by attending drama school. Later he completed his Masters in teaching at Gonzaga University.
After retirement Stephen focused his energy on advocating for the arts in Kimberley. He was a key founder of Kimberley Summer Theatre and summer arts festivals. Stephen fundraised, wrote, directed and acted in many musicals to share with Kimberley citizens and tourists.
Stephen is survived by his daughters Amy and Sarah, his son in law Kurstun, his siblings David, John and Anne, his grandchildren, Kaelum, Aleah and Georgia and his dear and devoted friend Elizabeth.
Stephen developed many strong and lasting friendships throughout the many years he called Kimberley home.
Donations can be made in Stephen's memory to the Kimberley Arts Council or to a charity of your choice.
