June 15, 1942 - March 11, 2021
With sadness the family of John Patrick "Pat" Harrington announces his passing at the age of 78 on March 11, 2021.
John was born in Fernie, B.C., on June 15, 1942 to Mel and Mildred Harrington. Growing up in Fernie, he was one of 7 children in what had to be a busy household. A young Pat excelled in sports as he was an accomplished boxer, basketball player and baseball player.
Later in life, Pat enjoyed golfing and gardening. For those who would pass by his house, they would often see him moving a sprinkler, cutting the grass, or stopping anyone passing by for a conversation. Pat had a wave for most everyone driving by.
Pat worked as a School Administrator in Horse Fly, Williams Lake and Kimberley. He was an exceptional school administrator who really loved his work. He created countless personal connections with both students and staff. The genuine interest he took in the lives of others helped develop long lasting relationships with many students and his community.
Pat loved to laugh as he would often recall specific details of those he would talk too. Many felt supported and cared for by Pat. His career in Kimberley started at McKim and was quickly followed by a long-standing assignment as Principal at Selkirk Secondary School for 18 years, Pat retired in 1997.
As a father and grandfather, Pat was second to none. He took a great interest in everything that his kids and grandchildren encountered in life. Pat was married to Myrna for 56 years. Together, they enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino and regular road trips to Fernie, Salmon Arm and Richmond. Myrna's love and ongoing support gave Pat the opportunity to live comfortably at home throughout most of his days living with dementia.
Pat is survived by his wife, Myrna, son Chris (Tanya) and grandson Ben, son Sean (Sandra), and grandsons, Ryan, Liam and Owen, Pat's siblings, Jim (June), Terry (Gena), Peter (Marion), Carol (Glen), and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Mel & Mildred Harrington, niece Jessica, brother Michael (Patsy) and sister Maureen (Frank).
There was a private family service on Monday, March 15th, 2021. Interment will take place in the summer when family can safely gather.
In lieu of flowers, please consider doing something kind and out of the ordinary for someone you love.
