July 12, 1935 - July 31, 2023
In loving memory ~
Leona was born in Jansen, Saskatchewan, on July 12, 1935, to Daniel and Hulda Schinkel. She moved to Vernon, B.C., as an infant and then to many southern B.C. locations as her father worked on railway contracts. She met her husband, Harold, at Wardner, B.C., and they were married on February 5, 1954, at Cranbrook.
After raising a family of seven in Marysville, Leona worked for fourteen years at the Marysville Post Office. She was also a dedicated volunteer at the Marysville Thrift Store and she was recognized for 50 years of service by the Kimberley Health-Care Auxiliary.
She was predeceased by her husband Harold Neidig in January 2015. She was also predeceased by her parents, sister Wanda Miller (Schinkel) her brothers Walter, Verner, William and Alfred Schinkel.
Leona is survived by sons Richard (Paula), Darren (Sanny), Robert (Melissa) and daughters Marilyn Loelke, Sheila Neidig, Susan (Ron) Halvorson, and Karen (Steve) Danyluk. She has 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
At Leona's request, there will be a family gathering rather than a public service. The family gathering and internment will be on August 21st.
The family would like to thank the staff of Garden View Village, the Kimberley Medical Clinic, the Loan Cupboard, care providers of East Kootenay Community Hospital, paramedics of the local ambulance service and the numerous doctors involved in our mother's care over the past few years. A very special thank goes to Dr. Van Zyl and Dr. Wik for their long-standing guidance and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kimberley Health-Care Auxiliary at 140 Howard Street, Kimberley, B.C. V1A2G6.
