January 30, 1961 - October 6, 2019
Randy fought his final game with the insidious disease, brain cancer, with courage and dignity, but lost the short battle with his family by his side on Sunday, October 6, 2019. Randy sadly leaves behind his loved and cherished son Miikka, Miikka's mother and longtime partner, Monika, and also his beloved partner, Marjorie (MJ) Wilder. Also, his siblings, Patti Gilmar, (Bob), Pam Heaton, (Ray), special sister-in-law Heather Fisher, Nancie Ricketts (Mel), Cara White (Rick), Bruce Fisher (Patti) as well as many nieces and nephews. Randy was predeceased by his parents Gordon and Edna and his brother Mickey (Mark).
Randy was passionate about many things, but a few things stood out; his passion for sports, his love of his son Miikka, his travelling adventures and his success in his career. While growing up in Kimberley, Randy developed his love of all sports. Initially he excelled in soccer which he continued to play at a competitive level for many years and to this day his soccer friends are considered to be some of his best friends. But soccer wasn't his only passion he also loved to ski, play hockey, hike and golf. As the years passed, golf became a devoted passion and the annual "Palm Springs Guys Trip" became a coveted event. When he wasn't playing himself, he was actively involved in coaching or watching Miikka's games and practices.
In their time together, Randy and Monika enjoyed many long road trips and vacationed throughout North and Central America. They shared a love of travel, hiking, camping, reading and long walks with Randy's basset, Bo. Much of their free time was dedicated to family - especially Miikka. Randy's first real career started in the restaurant industry in the Lower Mainland in the mid-1980s, working and managing at the Keg and Red Robin. Randy's personable and charismatic management style was noticed, and he was quickly recruited for sales and marketing within the insurance business, now known as Manulife. Randy's outgoing personality and candid perspective made him well known and respected by many, including much of the competition.
Four years ago, Randy was asked to assume the role of Director of Manulife Group Benefits in BC.
This role offered Randy the opportunity to mentor a young team in business, and in life. In this position, he was able to make his most significant impact, helping this team to achieve success. In
2018, the BC team recorded its highest sales numbers ever. Randy's senses of humour, intelligence, and unwavering positive outlook, have formed a legacy that goes much further than sales statistics.
Randy was much more than The Boss. He was a born leader and a true friend.
Randy found complete peace and joy during his past year and a half with MJ. Together they hiked, kayaked, golfed, and visited many pubs throughout Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. They fought the battle as bravely and optimistically as possible and enjoyed every moment. Randy's final game could not have been fought harder!
A Celebration of Randy's Life will be held at the UBC Golf Club on Sunday, 20 Oct, 2-5 pm.
In lieu of flowers donation can be made to the Vancouver Thunderbird Minor Hockey Association.
