June 19, 1937 - December 1, 2020
On December 1, 2020, Ted peacefully departed his eclectic adventure. Ted was a man of diverse passions and he pursued them with true enthusiasm. Mountain treks, fly fishing, photography, gourmet cooking, cross country skiing, kayaking, classical music, gardening, road rallying, curling, fancy cars, a love for animals, and the CBC were just a sampling of his interests. Ted literally drove thousands of miles across B.C., and Alberta to be with his family.
Ted grew up on the west coast with his older brother Tony, and parents Sallie and Dick. His early years were filled with camping, fly fishing, duck hunting and the Seaforth Highlander Cadets. His education at UBC gave him a lifelong career as a social worker and his summer job as a student fostered his love for geology and Canada's north, while prospecting for gold in the Yukon.
Through his work, the communities of the Alaska Highway became home to Ted for many years. He had a wealth of knowledge about B.C., and its back roads. In the late 80's he relocated to the Kootenays where he forged strong friendships and lived his ideal outdoor life until very recently. Kimberley was truly Ted's home and he took great pride in his hometown and his friends.
Ted will be greatly missed by his children Gretchen (Trevor) and Joel (Dana), grandsons Jacob and Carter, brother Tony, nieces Joanna and Sarah, nephews, Mark, and Jonathan, and by all whose lives he touched. He was predeceased by sister-in-law, Margaret, and, only just recently, by Gretchen and Joel's Mum and his partner in the north, Judi Phillips.
A donation to a cause near and dear to your own heart would be a welcome gesture in memory of Ted. If so inclined, raise a dram of scotch to a life well-lived. With the hope that 2021 brings brighter times for joyous gatherings, look for news of a Celebration of Life in Kimberley.
