Letter: Kudos to City of Kimberley for composting system

web1_231114-kdb-letter-k_1

We wish to extend our gratitude to the Council and Staff of the City of Kimberley for implementing a city-wide Composting Program.

This commendation extends to the previous council which unanimously supported the initiative to divert household and property organic waste to facilities that would make compost, that would eventually become a component of soil.

By redirecting organic household and plant waste to a composting facility and away from landfills, we can significantly reduce the level of methane gas, a major contributor to global warming, whose effects we have seen, or experienced, in the form of droughts, floods, landslides and forest fires.

Kimberley residents will begin to see the environmental and financial benefits of redirecting organic waste, as has neighboring Creston, whose composting program has reduced waste directed to landfills by 30% and saved the city, and taxpayers, thousands in operating costs.

Since Kimberley’s Composting Program’s inception, a month ago, we have been heartened by the use of the organic bins in our neighborhood.
