Kimberley Scouters are excited to be planning another season of exploring our beautiful part of the world for our Scout Troop here in Kimberley.  As a boy growing up in England I grew up with Cubs and Scouts but although I loved it and had lots of fun I really didn’t have the opportunities available to the youth living here in Kimberley.  We are truly blessed and now as an adult in the Canadian Scouting movement I fully appreciate what we have on offer right here on our doorstep!  This surely is our best resource…

Last year we explored lots of places that locals asked “where did you say you went…”, and “you got there by sled?”  My response is always with a huge smile, as I keenly retell our tales; the funny bits, the hard bits, who did what, who said this or that…well you know how those great trips go…. You do, don’t you?  I really hope so!  My son, now 17 yrs old, has seen so much adventure already with scouts and he continues to explore with his buddies now that he is self-sufficient, confident and competent.  It is a joy to see.

We have a small band of volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make things happen…well you know how that happens everywhere in this small town we call home and our community, hey?  We get ‘er done!  Despite the volunteer hours, every single minute is worth it when you see these youth develop into confident young adults happy in their own capabilities in all environments.  We have some other great resources too.  We have a trailer loaded with canoes and all of the gear to go with it, a High Ropes Course at Camp Stone to swing around on, lots of XCountry skis, boots & poles to get into places to explore during winter.  We have modern lightweight backpacking tents, stoves, oh and don’t let me forget, a couple of sleds to help us get backcountry access…see pretty modern and up to date hey…haha, not like in my day!!

Since 2008 (when I joined as a Scouter) we have had too many epic camping trips to list but we did make a few You Tube slideshows if anyone wants to search Kimberley Scout Troop on YouTube and check them out.  Suffice to say we have biked, hiked, skied, ski-jored, canoed & sled into our nighttime camp locations or a combination of a few of these.

Scouts is coed for youth aged 11 – 14yrs old.  The new Canadian Path Program is Youth Led so the adults are almost redundant lol….I wish..but we do our best to let youth lead the way and plan & execute their own program.  It’s challenging but very very rewarding.  We will be hosting a Registration Evening at Camp Stone (First left after the Camp Ground on the St Mary’s Lake Rd) on Sep 15th from 6pm – 8pm if anyone would like to find out more about us. There will be Beavers (5-7yrs) and Cubs (8-10yrs) also for younger brothers and sisters.  Come check us out!
