Have you been into the Kimberley Elks Club lately? If you haven’t, stop by and take a look — you might be surprised.
The lounge area has been renovated, and a welcoming atmosphere is in place.
Times are changing and the Elks are changing with them, say members Roy Cimolai and Jori Adank.
One of those changes is Techno-Fridays offering DJ music beginning at 9 p.m. These nights have proved very popular with Kimberley’s 20-something crowd.
“We do want to encourage young people to come to the Elks,” Adank said. “We’ve had a very good response to the Techno Fridays. In fact we had six new, young members sign up because of them.”
Kimberley’s Elks are one of the few service clubs with their own clubhouse. The Elks Club on Howard street features a two-lane bowling alley downstairs, a good-sized hall on the main floor and the lounge upstairs. Any part of the club is available for use.
“You can use the bowling alley for kids parties, if you have a club, you can host meetings at the lounge,” Adank said. “It’s a perfect set up for meetings and there’s no charge. Make this your clubhouse. There’s a bar. Clubs that have monthly meetings can have them here.”
“We are new and improved,” Cimolai said. “The members have been working hard to make the Elks more welcoming and we welcome new ideas. As an Elks member you have a say.”
You don’t have to be a member to visit the lounge, another Elks member would be happy to sign you in.
But membership has its advantages and the Elks would certainly like to see more people sign up. The club also offers couples memberships at a reduced price.
The lounge features meat draws on Thursdays and Saturdays, happy hour beginning at 2 p.m. on Fridays, the DJs on Fridays and Adank is hoping to arrange for live music on Saturdays as well.
Because the Elks are a service club, every bit of profit from the lounge is give back to the community.

The Elks are hosting a New Year’s Eve party featuring the last Kimberley performance by Don Cherry For Prime Minister. Tickets are $40 per person or $70 per couple.
