Kimberley to offer building permit rebates

Program to encourage green renovations and building

Those renovating their homes or building new ones in Kimberley can be eligible for building permit rebates of up to 80 per cent after Council passed a rebate program this week.

The rebate program is intended to encourage  home builders and renovators to use energy efficient techniques and materials. The amount of the rebate will be based on how extensive the improvements are.

Heating is the second biggest producer of greenhouse gases in Kimberley after transportation and the largest use of energy.

The program won’t cost the city any money as it is based on potential revenue.

“There has been long standing interest in putting something like this together,” said Mayor Ron McRae.

Projects with building permits issued after January 1, 2014 are eligible for rebate subject to completion of a post-construction assessment.
