Wildsight will have their apple press available at the Harvest Party.

Wildsight Kimberley/Cranbrook in pleased to host a Harvest Party and Gazebo Opening on Sunday September 20th. The celebration will be starting at 2pm at the Kimberley Open Gate Garden on Rotary Drive, and will include harvesting, fun family activities, apple pressing, and the unveiling of the new gazebo. Those that haven’t been to the garden yet will learn what the garden is all about and share in the harvest!

This year has been a busy one at the Kimberley Open Gate Garden. New infrastructure development and programs have been in the works that are changing the landscape dramatically. The new gazebo, pathways, and gardens will encourage all ages and abilities to enjoy the fruits and vegetables of their labours, and create a place for all ages to share gardening knowledge with their fellow community members.

Dirk de Geus, the Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook Food Sustainability Coordinator is very excited to see the project come to fruition. “With help from community members including local organizations, we are leveraging funding and building from the ground up. Increasing the accessibility will better expand who can utilize the garden, especially through the installation of the pathway, that is under construction, the gazebo, and self-wicking beds created from repurposed freezers. These freezer beds increase accessibility by allowing the gardener to get involved without bending down.”

The project would not have been possible without grant funds as well as the great effort of many community members including Dave Check who volunteered his time operating the bobcat, and organizations such as Tyee Log & Timber, and Kimberley Alpine Resort.

Everyone is invited and anyone who would like to help harvest apples for the celebration is invited to meet at the garden at 10 a.m. on September 20th. Those with an abundance of apples are asked to bring them down for juicing from noon onwards.
