The game itself might not have been pretty, but in the end, the Mount Baker Wild basketball team managed to eek out a close win against the Cranbrook Firefighters in a charity game on Thursday night.

The Firefighters put up a good fight, but the Wild were unrelenting and held the lead for most of the game, which ended by a score of 53-51.

The event was a fundraiser for the B.C. Professional Fire Fighter’s Burn Fund, which provides live saving and supportive services to burn survivors and advocates for burn safety issues in the province.

“It’s just a great chance to get back into the community, get a chance to know some of the kids in high school and make a little bit of money for charity—the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund,” said Murray Robertson, a fire fighter who organized the third annual event.

Decked out with bandannas, wigs and grass skirts, the fire fighters had trouble stopping their younger and more skilled opponents, however, for both sides, the emphasis was on fun.

“I can’t wait for next year to do this,” said Heidi Anderson, a Grade 11 student on the girls basketball squad. “It’s for a good cause and it’s fun to get the community together.”

PT the Clown was on the sidelines to entertain the kids, while the Mount Baker Cheer Team put on a show at the halftime break.
