The sixth annual Cranbrook Open Bonspiel was nothing short of a good weekend.
Running from Jan. 11-13 at teh Cranbrook Curling Centre the event drew curlers from around the Kootenays that faced off against each other.
Team Buchy ended up being the big winners, taking the final win in the A event over Team Nichol 7-3.
“It was good, we haven’t played in it for a few years, but the club did a great job. The ice was fantastic and the banquet was good — the whole spiel was great,” said Tom Buchy.
After the round robin play the teams were put into events. The A event saw teams who were the most successful in the round robin play.
With Team Buchy winning the A event, Team Medford won the B event, Team Qually winning the C event and Team Pellerin winning the D event.
“It was an all round really good spiel,” said Buchy. “All of the teams we played were tough.”
This was the first game together after adding their third Rob Ferguson.
“We were able to get rocks in play and get something out of the shot,” said Buchy. “It went well we are just preparing for Senior Men’s Playdowns next week in Creston. We worked out a few kinks and were able to make a few shots. Things went our way.”
Dave Toffolo (second), Darren Will (lead) and Buchy have played together for a couple of years already.
“It was a good weekend, everybody gelled and things worked out,” said Buchy.
After not competing in the men’s playdowns for two years Buchy said they wanted to get back to it.
“I heard a lot of good things about this spiel, and I know from playing it in the past it’s been good and it’s a good warmup for playdowns next weekend,” he said.

The team is getting ready for Jan. 18-20 when they head to Creston to play in the Senior Men’s Kootenay Zone Playdown. There will be two teams who qualify for the Senior Men’s Provincials in Trail.
The Cranbrook Bonspiel was a way for the team to prepare for the playdown as they aim to get a spot to provincials.
