The Kimberley Nordic Club (KNC) is set to host the annual Teck Kootenay Cup from February 3 to 4, 2024.

“The KNC has a tradition of excellence in the Canadian Nordic community and is an ideal location to host the Teck Kootenay Cup,” said KNC general manager Daniel Childress. “Kimberley is known for its per capita skiers and has one of the most well-attended children’s ski programs in all of Canada.”

Childress added many of Kimberley’s young skiers move up to the Kimberley Junior Racers Program, having been introduced to competitive racing at regional events like the Teck Kootenay Cup.

“Nordic racing has always been a strong component of the KNC, with many racers over the years advancing from regional races to provincial, national, and international competitions,” he said.

This event will draw hundreds of skiers from around the region, creating a fun and exciting environment at KNC, and drawing in a big boost to Kimberley’s economy.

The Teck Kootenay Cup Series provides affordable and accessible competition opportunities for developing athletes in the region. The annual event, held at a different location around the region each year, includes interval start, mass start and individual sprint competitions.

KNC’s location within Kimberley city limits provides visiting athletes easy access to all the local accommodations and amenities, but the centre’s trails are really where it shines and makes it such an ideal location for races of this caliber.

“The trails are fantastic in the winter because preparation begins in August,” explained head groomer Wayne Gilbert.

KNC is known not only for getting reliable good snow and moderate temperatures throughout the season, but for the overall quality of the trails, built and maintained by an experienced team with top-of-the-line machinery.
