Kimberley will host the Mowat Cup, the Provincial Junior A Tier 2 championship at the Civic Centre, April 18 to 21, 2024.
Mowat Cup Jr A Tier 2 championship to be played in Kimberley this April
It promises to be an exciting weekend of hockey, and Tasha Johnston, chair of the organizing committee, says they are ready to welcome teams and their fans and families from across the province.
The Mowat Cup features the winners from the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL), the Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL) and the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL), and the host team, the Kimberley Dynamiters.
“We are ready,” Johnston said. She estimates that hundreds of people will come to Kimberley for the weekend. “Each team brings their own fans,” she said.
Advance ticket sales for the event have been going well. “Our original budget goals was reached in February, wth 300 packages sold.”
Tickets have continued to sell at a steady pace since then. One of the perks of being the host team is that the Dynamiters will play all the evening games (7 p.m. start) in the round robin.
“We are the home team Thursday and Friday, and the away team on Saturday, which will be a little strange,” she said.
As with any big community event, there has been great buy in by local businesses and supporters.
“We have great sponsors for the regular season,” Johnston said. “But the community really stepped up for the Mowat Cup too.”
She says that she is really hoping the community will come for all the games.
“Come down and show some support. There will be some very talented plays out there. It will be really good hockey.”
