This year’s New Year’s Eve Torchlight Ski event at the Kimberley Nordic Club will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.. Enjoy food, friends and skiing around the 3km loop, lit with torches and candles.

Admission is by donation with proceeds supporting the Kimberley Nordic racers. Treats and hot beverages will be available.

Event organizer Frank Ackermann says the main difference this year is the earlier start time of 6 p.m., which will allow those participating to move onto other events afterwards.

“The cross country ski trail are in great shape right now, and it’s looking like the skiing will be amazing for New Year’s Eve,” said Ackermann. “Without a full moon this year, the light from the torches will be even more spectacular. We’ve purchased 20 more torches this year, and have refurbished many of our old ones.”

If you don’t ski or don’t know how to, snow shoes are also an option.

“My favourite part [of the night] is when we turn the lights off on the trails and descend into a beautiful darkness lit by torches, especially along the single track trail beside Spruce Trail,” Ackermann said.
